The Modern Era runs from January 2013 onward, with a cast of thirty voters, its own stakeholder groups, and its own state and district data. It is the last of the three casts that hand over to one another on the calendar. A game that began on The Nineties or The 2000s cast passes to this one the month it reaches 2013, and no further cast follows it. It is also the default era: every scenario that has no era of its own, including custom presidents and workshop packs built on a modern reference, plays here. The setup screen describes the period as the ACA fights, the Trump phenomenon, COVID and the era of polarisation.

Presidents on offer

Four presidencies in this era are historical and free to play. Barack Obama in 2013 is the second term, facing a hostile House, with the ACA rollout, the Syrian civil war, ISIS and the Snowden revelations still ahead. Donald Trump in 2017 is the first term. He has lost the popular vote, and North Korea and COVID are still ahead of him. Joe Biden in 2021 has a comfortable electoral mandate and slim congressional majorities. Trump in 2025 is the second term; the Constitution bars a third, so there is no re-election ahead of him. The alternative candidacies, all of which are premium, are Kamala Harris in 2025, Trump re-elected in 2021 but having lost the House, Hillary Clinton in 2017, Bernie Sanders in 2017 in an alternative world where Clinton is not the nominee, and Mitt Romney in 2013 in an alternative world where Obama is not the incumbent. Two challenge scenarios also start in this era. Can You Save Biden starts in January 2024, at 38 per cent approval, with a hostile House and an election eleven months away. The Bidenism Challenge locks the player's public messaging each turn to a verbatim Bidenism, a well-known phrase or saying in Joe Biden's own style. Designated Survivor, which rebuilds a government after its leadership has been wiped out in 2025, Create Your Own, and the Workshop also play in this era; all three are premium. With Deployments and War switched on, the 2013 start inherits the Afghanistan War and an Iraq advisory mission. The 2017 and 2021 starts inherit the Afghanistan War and the anti-ISIS campaign. The 2024 and 2025 starts inherit the Ukraine and Israel support missions, and, except for Harris, the anti-ISIS operations as well.

How the period plays

The voters sit on the five-step scale from strong Democrat to strong Republican. The stakeholder groups range from Wall Street and Big Tech to Fox News and MAGA to the Progressive Caucus and the renters' coalition. Diplomacy is conducted with China, Russia, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the Middle East and Latin America. The Modern Era is the only period whose elections are scored district by district; every earlier cast is scored state by state instead.

A unit of campaign war chest is worth $10 million in this era. In Career Mode, income and costs are scaled to the dollar values a career played in the 2020s would expect (see Money in Career Mode).

Campaign-season media appearances take place on the Joe Rogan Experience, NPR's All Things Considered, Fox and Friends, MSNBC primetime, The View and Newsmax. News and commentary in this era never reference anything that happens after the game's current date.

Toggles

Every toggle except Red Scare is available in this era. Tweeter exists in this era and is switched on automatically for a premium player when a modern scenario is chosen; there is no separate setup toggle for it. The Persona Mode selector offers two options here: Whacko Mode, for which every modern voter has an exaggerated description, and Tweeter Is Not Real Life, which replaces the cast with the Tweeter commentators. The Fourth Estate is written for this era, but it is not offered in any era yet, because it is still being built. Covert Operations runs its War on Terror theatre in this era. Dirty Tricks, Expanded Congress, Weekly Pacing, Presidential Debates, Podium Clock, National-Vote Elections and Difficulty are all available, and the debate rounds in this era are judged by the modern cast.
