Maria is a Cuban-American estate agent in Coral Gables whose family fled Castro's Cuba. She is the Latino voter Democrats keep expecting to win and keep losing, right of centre on the economy, hostile to socialism, and, unlike her parents, supportive of abortion rights.
Who they stand for
Maria is the third generation of the Miami exile community, and the first for whom Cuba is a story told by relatives rather than a personal memory. Miami-Dade County had been drifting towards the Democrats: Obama carried it twice, and Clinton won it by a wide margin. Then, during the Democratic primaries of 2016 and 2020, Bernie Sanders appeared on television calling himself a socialist. At the same time Venezuela collapsed under Nicolas Maduro, with relatives arriving in Florida every week, and Trump's campaign aimed the word 'socialism' directly at Florida's Latino voters. Cuban-Americans moved back towards the Republicans in 2020, Ron DeSantis carried Miami-Dade in 2022, and Trump won the county outright in 2024.
Maria differs from Hialeah Gladys and Coral Gables Orlando because Castro died in 2016, leaving her anti-communism with no living target in Havana, so it is directed at the American left instead. Her Catholic faith has weakened at a similar pace: she voted for Florida's 2024 abortion amendment, which won a majority but failed the sixty per cent threshold required to pass. She leans Republican, where her parents were certain.
Playing to them
Maria supports a president who talks about free markets, small business, and policing, backs Israel, and treats Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua as dictatorships rather than friendly neighbours. She will accept a Republican who leaves abortion policy alone, and a Democrat who never uses the word socialism. A Democrat who cannot stop using it loses her support almost immediately. She sees federal mandates, tax rises on her sales commissions, and gun control as the state reaching into private life, the kind of control her family left Cuba to escape.
Winning her support costs support on the left: Brooklyn Jamal, College Chloe, and Woodstock Allen want the government programmes she calls socialism, and Detroit Denise wants the union power Maria distrusts. A Republican who wins her by banning abortion loses her again, along with Plain Jane and Edison Chen. Phoenix Pablo shares her economics and her Latino background but not her family history with Cuba, so an anti-communist message reaches Maria but passes him by.

Cuban-American anti-communists, one step weaker in each generation as the distance from Cuba grows. For Orlando, who left Cuba as a child, Castro decides every issue. For Gladys the anti-communism is inherited from her parents and confirmed by the Elián case and the Iraq war. For Maria, Castro is dead and the anti-communism is directed at Bernie Sanders and at anyone who uses the word socialism. Their Catholicism weakens at the same rate: Maria supports abortion rights, which Orlando and Gladys would never say. Strong Republican, then strong Republican, then lean Republican.
