Game modes

Fantasy President Career offers five ways to play. Two of them are full games: the presidency and Career Mode. The other three are separate rooms that use the same voters. The presidency is the original game. It puts the player in the White House for a term, and a focus group of American voters judges the player's decisions a month at a time. Career Mode is a second game built on the same underlying system. It follows one political life from an early stage through to, potentially, the presidency. The Sandbox lets a player test a single policy against the voters, with no consequences and no ongoing game. The Policy Guesser turns other players' Sandbox tests into a guessing game. The Workshop lets players write scenario packs for each other to play in the presidency game. All five modes are reached from the Your Careers screen, which lists a player's saved games above a column of buttons.

The modes

• The Presidency is a four-year term played one month at a time, or one week at a time if Weekly Pacing is on. Each month brings an event, a policy, the civil service's analysis, the focus group's verdict, the stakeholders, the papers and the state map. A midterm election and a presidential election are on the calendar. Four modern scenarios are free. Every other scenario, and every mode toggle, needs a premium account.
• Career Mode follows one person through a political life, beginning in a chosen starting year between 1990 and 2025. The player can start as a governor, a state legislator, a member of Congress, a senator, the President, or a private citizen with no office at all. Standing with voters is kept as two numbers, recognition and favourability, tracked for every kind of voter in every state. The player can run for any office. The presidency is the last office in a career, and winning it hands the game over to the presidency mode. Career Mode is premium and is marked as being in beta.
• Policy Guesser shows two real policies that other players submitted in the Sandbox and asks which one scored higher with the national voter map. Each correct answer extends a streak, and the first wrong answer ends it. Policy Guesser is free.
• Sandbox is the persona tester. A player types in any policy, with an optional line of public messaging, and sees the reaction of one era's whole focus group. The results include a national average, a state map and every voter's score and comment. Sandbox is premium.
• Workshop lets players create scenario packs for the presidency game. It has a studio for writing a world, a president, a government, the rules and up to 150 events, and a gallery for browsing, rating and reporting other players' packs. A pack is published under a name the author chooses. Workshop is premium and is marked as being in beta.
