Vegas Danny is a young Latino bartender on the Las Vegas Strip and a member of the Culinary Union, but he belongs to neither party. He is a swing voter of the 2020s, and his vote follows his rent rather than any party loyalty.
Who they stand for
Danny stands for the young Latino service workers of the Sun Belt. This group drifted away from the Democrats between 2020 and 2024, and that shift turned Nevada Republican in a presidential election for the first time since 2004. Danny belongs to Culinary Workers Local 226, the union that helped keep Nevada a Democratic state for Harry Reid, but membership in the union does not decide how he votes. His decade began in March 2020, when the Strip closed and Nevada had the highest unemployment rate in the country. Rent then rose faster than his tips did. In June 2024, Trump proposed exempting tips from tax at a rally in Las Vegas, and both parties were soon promising the same policy, which showed Danny that being an undecided voter pays off.
His predecessors, East LA Jazmín and Las Vegas Marisol, voted Democratic because their union asked them to and because they remembered Proposition 187. Danny is too young to remember Proposition 187, and he thinks the union has done nothing for him. He still belongs to the same union his predecessors did, but he no longer shares their reasons for voting Democratic.
Playing to them
Danny votes on his monthly bills and on whether a politician sounds like someone who has actually paid one. He watches the cost of rent, the cost of fuel, and the tax on his tips. A president who brings any of those costs down keeps his vote for that election cycle, but only for that cycle. Inflation loses him faster than any single policy, because he lives on tips, pays rent every month, and feels a price rise as soon as it happens. He also responds badly to being lectured. A president whose economy is raising his rent, and who then lectures him about democracy, comes across as insulting rather than persuasive. Immigration, abortion and guns do not move him either way, so a candidate who spends effort on those issues wins nothing from Danny.
Winning Danny over with tipped-wage rises and rent relief costs the support of Country Club Craig and Phoenix Pablo, who pay for those policies. The legal cannabis and sports betting that Danny enjoys offend Iowa Martha and Gospel Gloria. Rent relief that appeals to Danny also wins over Renter Ryan and Plain Jane, and the same wage increase wins over Valley Rosa.

Young Latino service workers in union jobs. Jazmín and Marisol vote Democrat for two reasons: the union tells them to, and they remember Proposition 187 as an attack on their families. Danny has the same union job and neither reason. He was too young for 187, and he does not think the union has done anything for him. So he keeps the union card, feels no loyalty to the Democrats, and votes on tips, rent and the price of gas. A loyal vote becomes a swing vote in one generation because the reasons for the loyalty were not passed down. The union job and the memory of 187 define the line, not sex.
