Ryan is a marketing manager in his early thirties in Austin who wants to marry, buy a home and raise children but cannot afford to do so. He is college-educated and was moderate until the rising cost of everyday life pushed him to the right.
Who they stand for
Ryan represents a millennial who followed the conventional path of education and career and still cannot afford the life his parents had at his age. House prices in Austin rose faster than almost anywhere else after the technology industry expanded there from 2020, mortgage rates rose above seven per cent in 2023, and the median age of first marriage and first home purchase kept rising nationwide. Ryan is not working class and is not focused on culture-war issues; his shift toward the right in the 2024 election, part of a wider shift among young men and renters, was driven by rent, groceries and a sense that the left regarded his wish for a family as suspect.
Anaheim Darlene and Fox News Phyllis, earlier personas, moved right when their towns changed and when border concerns grew; Ryan moves right because owning a home is out of reach. All three are white swing voters who change their vote over an issue liberal politicians avoid, and all three deny the change is ideological. What earlier personas lost at the neighbourhood level has narrowed, for Ryan, to the ability to marry and have children, and all three resent being called bigots for raising it.
Playing to them
Ryan responds well to housing policy, including zoning reform, more homebuilding, and a president who names the cost of housing as a national problem and treats marriage and children as legitimate goals rather than minor interests, plus lower taxes and stable prices, since inflation drew him into politics in the first place. He does not forgive a president who calls men like him bigots, lectures the public about privilege, increases welfare spending while he cannot save for a deposit, or lets rents keep rising while focusing on other issues. He has mixed feelings about abortion, immigration and transgender rights, and a president who forces a firm position on those issues pushes him toward whichever side is not forcing it.
Building the housing Ryan wants costs the support of Suburban Sarah and Grill Dad Greg, whose property values benefit from restrictive zoning. Cutting the welfare spending he resents costs Valley Rosa and Appalachian Amber. A Democrat can win him by building housing and avoiding cultural topics; a Republican can win him by ending lectures about privilege, but loses him again if prices do not come down.
